Week In Review

Yesterday was the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, which first aired September 8, 1966. All day long the internet was abuzz with people sharing their love for Star Trek: how it inspired them to go into science or film or writing or teaching, how they watched with their parent or their child or both, how it sparked lifelong friendships and even marriages, how Star Trek changed their lives for the better. There are too many amazingly wonderful tributes to link them all but here are a few by friends of our site:

Anika completed her Nyota Fashion Project, posted her photo-cap of Voyager’s Flashback, originally produced for Star Trek‘s 30th Anniversary, and wrote up her Top Ten Original Series Episodes (other series to come!).

Sam wrote about her love of Star Trek on twitter:

Finally, The Roddenberry Foundation announced a $1,000,000 prize to be awarded to innovative thinkers who want to achieve the future that Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry imagined.

In other news! DC announced a new miniseries that’s FINALLY giving Supergirl the Year One treatment she deserves, called Supergirl: Being Super. It’s written and drawn by women! Yay!

BioWare released some gameplay footage from the next installment in my all-time favorite video game series, Mass Effect: Andromeda. They also promised a new trailer on November 7th (N7 day!) and have been sharing some info about characters.

All of the episodes of the Amazon series One Mississippi release today. It’s a semi-autobiographical 30 minute dramedy co-written by and starring Tig Notaro (Diablo Cody is also a writer!). It’s about Tig, who just underwent chemo and a mastectomy, returning home when her mother dies. Sam watched the pilot this week and it was amazing.

There is apparently a new Underworld movie? Between this and the upcoming final Resident Evil movie, it’s a great time to be a fan of early aughts supernatural action franchises led by women (all two of them).

And when she wasn’t Trekking, Anika read this amazing Hunger Games Ice Skating AU featuring her HG OTP (Haymitch & Effie) and based on the Best Ice Skating Movie Ever, The Cutting Edge. It’s a great representation of ‘fan fiction you never knew you needed’.
